Dr. Butwell Relieves Chronic Neck and Back Pain

February 02, 2021

“How many times do I have to see you, doc?” A common question for your Georgetown chiropractor. Chiropractic care at Dr. Butwell follows an evidence-based algorithm of care supported by clinical research that extends back to the 1970’s: The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management. Recent research confirms the system and its goals in which Georgetown chiropractic patients can find calm as they heal.

CHIROPRACTIC USE

Georgetown chiropractic patients wouldn’t be chiropractic patients if it did not produce beneficial results. The latest study of who uses chiropractic was completed in Malaysia: 35% of Malayasians visited chiropractic. Though it was slightly lower than traditional and complementary medicine care usage there, it is a good percent! (1) Approximately 25% of U.S. residents sought chiropractic for neck and back pain management. 35 million U.S. adults went to a chiropractor in the last 12 months. (2) That number is expanding as more people look for and find a non-surgical, conservative approach to pain relief in chiropractic knowing that it may take a few visits to obtain results. Dr. Butwell is committed to setting a realistic treatment plan for optimal outcome.

NEW RESEARCH RESULTS OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE AT 3 MONTHS

Wondering how many chiropractic visits patients use and the outcomes? A recent study reported that in 1,362 chronic low back pain patients and 1,214 chronic neck pain patients’ function improved and back and neck pain reduced with chiropractic care in 90 days. Those who reported worse pain at first had more chiropractic visits. Chronic low back pain sufferers with more than one visit a week benefitted more. At 3 months, chronic back and neck pain patients were getting better slowly, may have even attained maximum improvement, and were potentially managing their chronic pain using a variety of chiropractic visit frequencies. (3) That’s our goal, too, at Dr. Butwell: educate our Georgetown back pain and neck pain patients about how they can help themselves with pain management and prevention! With Cox® Technic, a study of 1000 patients found that 12 visits and 29 days were the mean days and visits for improvement. Disc herniations took a little longer and needed more visits than sprain/strains. (4) Dr. Butwell shares statistics like this to assist our chiropractic patients form realistic expectations.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS WITH CHIROPRACTIC CARE

Georgetown chronic neck and back pain patients are realistic. Despite health policy today that seems to want a cure for whatever is wrong, most chronic spine pain patients want pain management that they know will require ongoing care rather than “cure” from their chiropractic care. (5) Cox® Technic used at Dr. Butwell has always presented the notion of “control not cure” when it comes to most back pain and neck pain issues. It resonates with back pain and neck pain sufferers who have pursued care from a variety of different providers that they “get” it. The 50% Rule of Cox® Technic makes sense to them: 50% relief in 30 days or referral for imaging or other consultation, 50% relief drops the visit frequency by 50%, 50% relief changes the treatment from Protocol I to Protocol II, etc. The chiropractic care system of Cox® Technic follows an established algorithm that provides patients realistic expectations.
