Dr. Butwell reveals these NEW back pain guidelines and recommendations:

Spinal Manipulation as a First Option

For acute, subacute and chronic low back pain, the American College of Physicians suggests non-invasive, non-drug treatment of low back pain at any of these stages, specifically spinal manipulation among the recommendations. (1) Georgetown chiropractic at Dr. Butwell cares for Georgetown back pain and Georgetown neck pain issues at any stage. Acute Pain: Spinal Manipulation

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) printed a review study of randomized clinical trials – high level research studies – about spinal manipulation for relief of acute back pain (back pain up to 6 weeks in duration). This review finds that spinal manipulation provides modest improvement in pain and function with no serious adverse effects. (2)

JAMA also printed an editorial by the esteemed medical doctor and author, Richard Deyo, MD, about spinal manipulation for back pain referencing Paige’s study. The editorial clarifies that spinal manipulation treatment for acute low back pain is appropriate. Its use is in line with the American College of Physicians review and subsequent guideline. Spinal manipulation produces modest improvement in pain and function in the short-term compared with sham manipulation, usual care and other treatments. And of note, Deyo emphasizes that, of the trials reviewed by Paige et al and the American College of Physicians, none suggested that spinal manipulation care was less effective than conventional medical care (drugs, rest, etc.). SMT proved equal to or better than conventional care. (3)
