Synovial Cysts Cause Back and Leg Pain, Dr. Butwell Offers Relief

August 14, 2018

A cyst. What does that bring to mind? For some Georgetown back pain sufferers, it would be a hint to their pain’s source. But the diagnosis of a synovial cyst as the culprit causing pain is an intriguing one. Back pain and leg pain may result from a synovial cyst which is where Georgetown chiropractic care at Dr. Butwell comes in to help. Georgetown chiropractic care with the Cox® Technic is documented to help decrease back pain and related leg pain because of a synovial cyst without Georgetown back surgery.

SYNOVIAL CYST FACTS

First, let us discuss what synovial cysts are. Synovial cysts are uncommon lesions associated with facet degeneration and commonly found in the lumbar spine at L4-S1. (1) 33% to 40% of synovial cysts are correlated with degenerative spondylolisthesis and instability of the affected joint. (2,3) Synovial cysts may produce sciatica/leg pain. (4) Synovial cysts appear in females mostly in their sixth decade of life, resulting in radicular pain and neurological deficits. These cysts are commonly seen at L4-5 which is also the site of maximum mobility in the lumbar spine. MRI is the diagnostic tool of choice as it shows the texture of the cyst (more or less fluid). (5) When synovial cysts appear lighter on MRI T2 images, they are likely more fluid filled and less likely gelatinous or calcified, rendering them potentially easier to ease. (6) Synovial cysts have been reported to disappear particularly if the cyst wall is not calcified. (7) Dr. Butwell works to help Georgetown back pain sufferers dealing with synovial cyst get rid of them, too.

SYNOVIAL CYST CAUSES

Wilby et al portray a channel that connects the facet joint capsule with the ligamentum flavum, the area where the synovial cysts form. At surgery for these cysts, they found that fragments of articular cartilage and bone were in the walls of the channels in 89% of the cysts. This debris blocks the channel from draining and triggers granulation tissue and scar formation probably leading to synovial cyst formation. (8) Dr. Butwell works on scar tissue to enhance the spine’s fluidity.

SYNOVIAL CYST TREATMENT

Conservative treatment of lumbar spine synovial cysts is recommended as some are included to disappear without surgery. (9) Conservative treatment is reasonable. If the cyst does not respond, then surgery is an option. (5) Cox® Technic has a record of conservative care relief for synovial cysts. (10) As implemented at Dr. Butwell, Cox® Technic was effective at relief when an epidural steroid injection didn’t. (11) In another case, a 75 year old man with back and leg pain and a synovial cyst treated for 3 months/16 visits felt 80% relief. (12) Cox® Technic at Dr. Butwell is relieving for many Georgetown back pain sufferers with synovial cysts.
