Georgetown Hip Fracture Risk Reduced by Multivitamin Use

March 16, 2021

Hip fractures. These are significant health issues globally. The risk of Georgetown hip fracture is impacted negatively by drugs taken for all sorts of issues and positively by nutritional supplements. Dr. Butwell constantly keeps in mind the risk of fragility hip fracture in our osteoporotic patients and carefully observes our Georgetown osteoporotic patients. A new, simple way to address hip fracture risk seems to be daily multivitamin supplementation. Easy!

Georgetown OSTEOPOROSIS AND HIP FRACTURE

As easy as it seems, just finding the people who are at risk for osteoporotic hip fractures and treating them to prevent a hip fracture is occasionally difficult! A meta-analysis (a top-level review) of published research data regarding the efficacy of screening the general population reported that such screening reduced osteoporotic fractures and hip fractures.  (1) Dr. Butwell is vigilant about looking for at-risk Georgetown osteoporotic and hip fracture patients.

DRUGS AND Georgetown OSTEOPOROTIC HIP FRACTURE

Fragility hip fractures and related matters like mortality are issues for healthcare providers. Certain pharmaceutical products are reported to change bone structure and influence the risk of fragility hip fractures. These drugs were highly associated with these fractures in a review of 38 studies on the topic: antidepressants, antiparkinsonian drugs, antipsychotic drugs, anxiolytic drugs, benzodiazepines, H2 antagonists, proton pump inhibitors, and thyroid hormone.  One drug intervention was linked to a decreased risk of hip fracture: hormone replacement therapy with estrogen. The advice researchers proposed to give patients at risk of fragility hip fractures due to medications: information about osteoporosis and fracture prevention. (2) That is good advice. Dr. Butwell is all about giving out information and would add that new research points to supplementation as a help.

Georgetown CHIROPRACTIC SUGGESTED NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS AND HIP FRACTURE REDUCTION

As hip fracture is a serious complication of osteoporosis, a non-drug approach like multivitamin use and its effect on hip fracture risk is most interesting.  A meta-analysis reported on 8 studies on hip fracture risk and multivitamin use. 80,148 subjects – 4237 of them had a fragility hip fracture – were examined. The average age was 69 years. 21% were male. Combined multivitamin supplements are already very popular and commonly used. Their use was found to be significantly protective against osteoporosis-related hip fracture. (3) Dr. Butwell hates to think any of our osteoporotic patients would suffer a hip fracture!
