Georgetown Anti-inflammatory, Anti-Tumor (and more) Healing with Frankincense and Myrrh

December 27, 2022

Frankincense and myrrh, two esteemed gifts sourced from the gum resins of trees - the Boswellia and the Commiphora, respectively – make marvelous partners in healing! Both have been incorporated throughout history in perfume, incense, aromatherapy, and medicine, particularly Chinese medicine. Their anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antioxidant, and more assets deal with issues with a variety of health conditions, many that Dr. Butwell sees in our Georgetown chiropractic patients who may want to know more!

THE COMBINATION: Frankincense and Myrrh

Chinese medicine admires frankincense and myrrh for their extensively beneficial health effects. Used in combination, their anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects and significantly for anti-tumor effects stopped growth of U266 multiple myeloma cells. (1) In Chinese medicine, frankincense-myrrh are components of an anti-tumor drug for a variety of cancers with recent research presenting its effect on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). How? By controlling pathological processes like cytokine-receptor binding and pathways and affecting the blood vessels that support tumors in HCC. Tumor volume was decreased, and pathological structure was reduced with frankincense and myrrh treatment. (2) Low dose frankincense/myrrh controlled urotheilial wound healing to improve symptoms of acute interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome.  (3) The frankincense/myrrh comination is a winning/healing one!

NEUROPATHIC PAIN

Dr. Butwell appreciates combinations of treatments to help our Georgetown chiropractic patients seeking healing. Chinese medicine treats diabetic neuropathy, a serious problem of diabetes and trigger of kidney disease, by controlling pathways involved in the glucose/lipid metabolism regulation, antioxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-fibrosis, etc. (4) Chinese medicine treatment of neuropathic pain commonly involves the frankincense-myrrh combination as it is described as being able to activate blood and disperse blood stasis. The frankincense-myrrh treatment was tested and found to reduce neuropathic pain likely related to neuro-inflammatory agents TLR4 and MyD88 and to preventing TRPV1 and inflammatory factor expression. (5). Dr. Butwell knows all this detail may not be your “thing” of wanting to understand as in depth as this, but we want to share the whole picture if only to highlight how well frankincense-myrrh eases neuropathic pain, a great effect!
