Melons Tasty and nutritious. Dr. Butwell takes care of back pain and neck pain and all such spine-related pain and knows nutrition is important in healing and sustained health. Dr. Butwell promotes healthy eating, and fruits provide superior nutrition benefits. Forward thinking researchers are even trying new ways to grow healthy melons enough to keep us all fed! Georgetown chiropractic services clients will find that research very intriguing!

BENEFITS OF MELONS

Every piece of a melon - peels, seeds, and bioactive compounds – offered health benefits in a new study. A specific melon from Honduras – the Galia variety – attracted researchers’ attention for its antioxidative, anticholesterol, antidiabetic, antibiotic (against pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, viruses), properties and stimulation of thyroid function. (1) Agricultural researchers used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis to review the phytocompounds of Honeydew melon (Cucumis melo L.) extracts. They uncovered 37 compounds in whole fruit and 14 in seed extract. (2) Growing healthy melons contributes to healthy humans!

A NEW MELON COMBINES BEST OF TWO MELONS

Something most of us do not think about is that cantalopes (“netted muskmelons”) are reported to be prone to surface contamination. What did researchers do to try to tamp down this issue? They crossed them with honeydew (“non-netted muskmelons”) to create an orange-fleshed honeydew melon fruit! This new fruit “Cucumis melo L.” is described as good sources of quite a few human-healthy nutrients. The researchers studied and explained extensively just where the nutrients are in each level of the fruit tissues! (3) Amazing what grabs a person excited, isn’t it?

FUTURE OF MELONS’ NUTRITION

Another curious side note discovered in collecting research about the nutritional value of melons is about growing melons (particularly the “carosello leccese” version of Curcumis melo L.) in a soilless, greenhouse environment with LEDs as supplementary light. This process didn’t adversely impact the nutritional value. The bioactive compounds for human health were still present including methyl gallate (antioxidative and antiviral), α-tocopherol, and β-carotene. (4) Interesting what today’s researchers are trying as our world population grows to 9.9 billion by 2050 to keep us fed and healthy!
