LOW BACK PAIN CHIROPRACTIC CARE: NON-INVASIVE, PAIN RELIEVING

First of all, Dr. Butwell admits that there are many options  available. In an attempt to determine what options works in managing acute and chronic low back pain, researchers analyzed randomized control trials, systematic reviews and well-written clinical guidelines to try to make some sense of all the options: general behavior, pharmacological therapy, psychological therapy, specfic exercise, active rehab and education, manual therapy, physical modalities, and invasive procedures. There are lots of approaches! Evenutally, manual therapy, spinal manipulation, and massage for acute and chronic low back pain were strongly to marginally recommended, getting scores of A to C. Further, spinal  manipulation was  backed by three high-quality trials, one systemic review (SR), plus two clinical guidelines for acute low back pain.  For chronic LBP, four higher quality trials, two SRs, as well as  four clinical guidelines found evidence to show pain improvement with spinal manipulation. Additionally, three  moderate quality trials corroborated pain improvement with chiropractic means for treating chronic LBP. Among many other discoveries, this one particularly stood out though: Of the numerous clinical trials with many types of invasive treatments, there was insufficient evidence for surgery as a treatment of chronic low back pain. (1) There are times that back surgery is appropriate, and your chiropractor knows this and works toegether with spinal surgeons. For many, Georgetown chiropractic care at Dr. Butwell provides non-invasive care of acute and chronic low back pain. A great starting place!

Georgetown BACK PAIN: SMT + EXERCISE

A combined effort for back pain relief produces results. 241 low back pain patients were randomized to three combos of care: spinal manipulation (SMT) twice weekly for 3 weeks with multifidus activating exercise or spinal mobilizing exercise or additional SMT sessions. Significant differences were noted for those patients in the SMT plus multifidus activating exercise group. Low back pain and its management is multi-factorial. This one study was able to show positive effects with SMT plus multifidus strengthening exercises. (2) Let us talk about at-home exercise to boost your relief.

Georgetown NECK PAIN: SMT + EXERCISE

What about neck pain? A combined approach works with it also. Regarding neck pain and upper cervical rotation restriction, patients who received manual therapy and performed cervical exercises at home showed significantly better outcomes in disability, pain, and function. Four 20-minute manual therapy sessions plus exercise and an at-home exercise routine proved superior to  exercise alone and a home-exercise program.  Neck disability indices, flexion-rotation tests, pain intensities, and more got better. (3) So do your exercises we recommend! They really do make a difference. Layering treatment with personal care works.
